Until 1873 the municipality of Milan was surrounded by another ring-shaped municipality. It was called 'Corpi Santi' (Holy Bodies) because the Austro-Hungarian legislation envisaged the construction of hospitals, prisons and cemeteries outside the walls and will-o'-the-wisps are even called 'Corpi Santi'.
